As we are living in the 20th century, we all are quite familiar with the word artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is a broader term for computer science and technology that tries to create machines on computers that are capable of performing various tasks like humans. It involves developing algorithms and models that enable a machine or a computer to learn from the data, and reasons, understand natural language patterns, and also can make decisions.

Now let’s go back to the history of artificial intelligence. The history of artificial intelligence dates back to ancient times but the modern concept of artificial intelligence emerged in the 20th century. Philosophers like Aristotle and ancient Greek contemplated the nature of thoughts and reasoning. In 1936, Alan Turing, a British mathematician introduced the concept of turning machine, a theoretical model of compilation. After that many scientists contributed to developing the old machine learning concept to today’s modern artificial intelligence.

Why do we need Artificial intelligence?

The purpose of using artificial intelligence is to create a machine or a system for helping humans to perform their tasks. It is used to make our daily life easier. Artificial intelligence tech is developed to increase human capabilities, automate processes and solve complex problems that would be challenging and time-consuming for humans to handle alone.

What are the benefits of artificial intelligence in the education sector?

Artificial intelligence has the potential to bring transformative benefits to the educational sector, enhancing the learning experience for students, teachers as well as educational institutions. It brings a new era of learning. 

1. Personalized learning:

As artificial intelligence can analyze different kinds of patterns and algorithms. So, by using this technique AI can also understand the strengths and weaknesses of a student. According to this, it delivers personalized content and an adaptive learning experience. As a student, we face various kinds of problems but by doing fearful use of AI we can overcome the situations.

 

2. Content recommendation:

AI algorithms can recommend relevant educational content like resources, books, articles, and videos based on the student’s interests and learning process.

3. Effective tutoring:

AI-based tutoring systems are very advanced and it gives real-time feedback and guidance to the student as a virtual tutor. These systems also can identify where the students are struggling and facing problems, AI helps a student to cover up those things.

4. Automated grading system:

For education purposes, a student has to submit many assignments and homework and also has to take part in many examinations. For checking the scripts AI has created a new era. With the help of AI, teachers can check the scripts within a very short time and can provide the students with faster feedback. This also helps the teachers to focus on the other aspects of teaching and individualized support.

The challenges of implementing AI in our education system:

AI-based teaching materials are very expensive. As an underdeveloped country, it is very difficult for the government to provide this kind of AI-based education in every educational institution in our country. Moreover, some corrupt officers are assimilating funds that are allocated for the development of the education sector. Many newspapers have written about this corruption but no one pays attention to this matter. But the government has created some educational institutions where students can introduce AI-based education.

When I was in school, a teacher named Ariful Islam, taught us ICT. He told us to do some projects about AI. But most of the students could not participate in that project because they did not have enough sponsorship for purchasing the components.    

Demerits of using AI in the education sector:

There are no unmixed blessings in the world. While AI has the potential to bring numerous blessings, it can also come with potential drawbacks and challenges. Sometimes students depend much on AI to do their tasks. These dependencies bring harm to their study. Over-reliance on AI and technology in education might lead to a situation where students depend on machines for learning, hindering their ability to think critically and creatively. As every student has access to the internet and is doing their task by commanding AI like ChatGPT, Google BardAI, etc. This affects their creativity very much.

There is a great dialogue from the movie “Oppenheimer(2023)” directed by one of the greatest directors Christopher Nolan that-

          “Now I become death, the destroyer of the world”

This is J. Robert Oppenheimer’s dialogue about who invented nuclear weapons. Nowadays AI has become this type of thing in the educational sector. We can not deny the blessings of AI in the educational sector but on the other hand, it grasped the student’s creativity and the ability of hard working and critical thinking. They become more lazy and become more dependent on technology. But if we, the students, become more conscious and make the proper use of AI, this can bring great achievement in our educational life.

Al Mueed Joarder Faiyaz, born and brought up in Khulna now living in Dhaka. He completed his SSC from Khulna Zilla School and his HSC from Government M.M City College, Khulna. Now he is a student at BRAC University in the Computer Science and Engineering Department. He likes to spend his leisure time with his friends and go out for walks. He likes to think for others and wants to help them as much as possible. He is a man with grand ambitions and he tries hard and soulfully to fulfill his goal.
