The Impact of Smartphones on Young Minds:
Unveiling Hidden Troubles
In this era of technological progress, smartphones have revolutionized how we lead our lives, interact with others, access and use information. Smartphones have assimilated into the daily lives of younger individuals, enabling fast connectivity and offering limitless enjoyment. However, concerns about the potential impact on the emotional and physical well-being of today's young people continue to be raised because of the growing amount of screen time and virtual distractions.
I have already seen and observed many cases in my society where excessive use of smartphones has already destroyed the careers of many young students. For quite some time, I have been observing the effects of smartphone addiction on the younger generation. Now I am going to explore the dangers that smartphones pose.
Health Problems from Excessive Screen Time
A pressing issue surrounding smartphones is the alarming amount of time young people spend glued to their screens. Prolonged social media browsing, gaming, and content streaming sessions can lead to digital addiction and adverse health effects. A research paper published in Plos One journal in 2019 tells us about the relationship between smartphone use and physical health. The researchers revealed that prolonged screen time contributes to sedentary behavior, leading to problems like obesity, posture problems, and sleep disruptions.
Devices that emit blue lights often disrupt the sleep patterns of young people, mainly when used late at night. Especially the blue light emitted by phone screens can interfere with the production of melatonin in our body, a hormone that regulates our sleep cycle. The circadian rhythm of our body can be disrupted by screen usage after sunset, which in turn affects sleep patterns. Irregular sleeping schedules can have adverse effects on mood, cognitive abilities, and general welfare.
The emergence of social media platforms has introduced both favorable and unfavorable effects on youth. Although they facilitate immediate connections with loved ones, they also subject users to a continuous flow of comparisons and unrealistic expectations. As young people struggle online to keep up with the sophisticated image of their peers, this can lead to stress, depression, and low self-confidence. There is a clear link between increased smartphone usage and increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. This is also becoming a very common trend in our country, Bangladesh, as the younger generation is getting addicted to social media platforms frequently.
Cyberbullying is Increasing
Cyberbullying is another significant concern that can leave emotional scars on young minds. A survey by Bangladesh Center for Communication Programs (BCCP) said that nearly 37% of the surveyed students were victims of cyberbullying at least once in their lifetime on smartphones. The report was published in 2019, and the situation is worse now in 2023 than before.
Starting to use smartphones without having much knowledge about facing cyberbullying makes young people much more vulnerable to it. There should be many sessions taken among the young's about cyberbullying by educational institutions.
Social Problems Caused by Smartphones Usages
The prevalence of smartphones has altered the dynamics of human connections, leading many young people to prefer online interactions over face-to-face discussions. This shift might impede acquiring vital social abilities such as understanding others, active listening, and nonverbal communication. These abilities are crucial for forming meaningful connections and navigating real-life situations.
There is a huge possibility that the next generation will be too weak in their mental and physiological states if the increasing effects of smartphones among today's people are not controlled now.
Effect of Smartphones on Student's Academic Performance
Nowadays, the problem of not having much focus on studying and the inability to engage in deep analytical thinking has become a very common problem among younger students, and the reason behind it is the excessive use of smartphones. Excessive smartphone use can interfere with this process, leading to diminished cognitive abilities, decreased attention spans, and impaired memory retention.
The constant exposure to a vast amount of information and instant gratification may hamper the ability to focus and engage in deep analytical thinking. This can significantly affect the student's academic performance. Young students may find it challenging to concentrate on their studies with the allure of social media notifications and gaming apps constantly vying for their attention. This distraction could lead to lower grades, decreased motivation, and an overall decline in educational achievements.
We know the results of some recent studies showing the negative effects of smartphone usage on the student's academic performance. Higher smartphone use, particularly before bedtime, is associated with poor sleep quality and shorter sleep duration, leading to potential negative effects on the academic performance of students.
Awareness is Needed, Not Exclusion
As the use of smartphones is becoming an unavoidable thing for the young generation, it is crucial to acknowledge the potential threats they pose to their well-being. The adverse impacts of excessive smartphone use on mental health, cognitive growth, and social engagement cannot be dismissed. Some research has shown correlations between prolonged screen exposure and heightened anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances in teenagers and young adults. Promoting a balanced approach to technology and establishing healthy screen time habits can help mitigate these risks and foster a healthier relationship with smartphones.
By encouraging open communication between parents, educators, and young individuals, we can create a supportive environment for discussing the impact of smartphones on their lives. Teaching digital literacy is essential, enabling individuals to assess online content thoughtfully, efficiently allocate their time, and interact responsibly on social media networks. With these skills, they can diligently navigate the digital realm, ensuring the protection of their emotional and psychological health.
We should aim for a future where smartphones enhance our lives by improving communication, education, and access to information, while safeguarding our mental and physiological state. We can create a more wholesome digital environment for future generations by proactively addressing the problems associated with smartphone usage.
